The golf swing is not just about how hard you can swing the club with your arms. It has everything to do with your hips, back and shoulders. The golf swing certainly starts with the proper grip on the club, but the motion of the golf swing comes from delivering a smooth stroke from your fingers all the way to your lower back.
The Backswing – A Simple Coil
The golf backswing begins as you make the movement with your arms pulling away from the ball. The movement continues and follows around as you turn your shoulders away from the ball. The hips rotate slightly as well, giving the appearance of a coiled spring.
The golf back swing is primarily about how the body is being coiled upwards thus creating the needed tension in the muscles as well as torque to be able to let out that all powerful downswing. It takes practice to coil the body in the proper manner so the ball can be hit with speed, power and accuracy.
You Have to Relax
To release the coil, the swing should not be hurried. It should be swift and smooth. It is not necessarily how hard and fast you hit the ball, but how controlled and smooth the swing is that makes the swing more powerful. Indeed, as you learn how to smooth out your swing you can practice uncoiling with more velocity, but it is generally better to learn how to relax and hit the ball accurately and smoothly in the beginning.
Let the Downswing Happen
Once you are moving with the downswing you should really just relax and let the uncoiling of your body happen naturally. Let the connection of the ball happen because you have prepared for the proper striking location with the backswing. Everything in the backswing is preparation. The downswing is simply the result of all that hard work. Keep the swing steady and smooth and you will connect with the golf ball in a pleasing manner.
You Have to Follow Through
If you do not follow through with the club essentially resting behind your back, then your swing will fail. You can not hope to have a good golf swing if the follow through is cut short. The power will be lost.
Get the golf swing right and you will drive the golf ball far and accurate. Get it wrong and you will be chasing shanked balls for hours.
